How to find a therapist: Getting the care you deserve.

So, you are ready to see a therapist! If you’re reading this you’re probably interested in pursuing therapy. I know how overwhelming this can be, when I was looking for a therapist myself it there were so many ways to find a therapist. I’m hoping this guide will help with your starting point.

1.     Consult your provider directory:

If you have insurance and plan to pay for therapy through your insurance plan, your first step would be to call your insurance company. They will be able to provide you with a list of therapists who are in your network in your area. Be sure to ask how many sessions are covered, what your plan entails and your out-of-pocket costs – so you don’t receive any surprises!

 2.     No Insurance?

If you don’t have insurance but you found several therapists that you might want to work with don’t hesitate to reach out and ask if they have a “sliding scale.” I know some therapists have limited slots available for sliding scale – don’t get discouraged yet! There is also an online directory called Open Path Psychotherapy Collective which is a partnership with licensed mental health clinicians in private practice who offer limited sliding scale time slots.

 3.     Check Psychology Today:

Psychology Today is a reliable online database  for mental health providers that will help you find a therapist in your area. You are able to filter by insurance, gender, scope of practice etc.

4.     Ask someone you trust:

A referral from a friend, family member or your doctor you trust is another way to find a therapist who might be a good fit for you. But remember it important to recognize that you may have different needs and goals with your therapist than the person giving you the recommendation. Be sure to still research the referral - There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to therapy, and the professional that works well for someone else might not work as well for you.

When you are ready to start looking – don’t hesitate to reach out to a therapist! You are allowed to reach out to as many therapists as you would like. Many therapists offer free consultations which is an opportunity for you to “interview” your therapist and decide if they are a good fit for you.

Stay tuned for my next blog post that will help you make the most out of your free consultation!
